JERRY JEROME

Jerry Jerome (1878–1943) was a proud Jarowair man and one of Australia’s earliest and greatest Aboriginal boxing champions. Rising to prominence in the early 1900s, Jerry broke barriers in a time of deep racism and strict government control over Aboriginal people.

Known for his exceptional speed, footwork and powerful right hand, Jerry fought more than 300 bouts across Australia and New Zealand. In 1912, he became the first Aboriginal man to win a major Australian boxing title — the Australian Middleweight Championship — cementing his place in sporting history.

Beyond the ring, his life represents resilience, courage and the unbroken spirit of Jarowair people. Jerry Jerome carried his culture with pride, fought with dignity, and left a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Jarowair families and First Nations athletes.

His story is a reminder of the strength of our ancestors and the power of self-determination in the face of adversity.
